Tonbodama (Glass Beads) Making Experience

Kinari

Create a beautiful tonbodama from fine glass

This independent store which attracts international buyers is one of only two glass rod manufacturers in Japan, and allows you to enjoy making tonbodama which is loved by Japanese through ages. Select the base colour and pattern, then it's off to the burner. Staff will provide guidance as you slowly melt a glass rod on a burner, turning the rod to carefully roll it up. Once a sphere shape is formed, the glass which will form the pattern is added and attached with the burner. Complete an original tonbodama, enjoying the colour-changing flame and the changing appearance of the glass as you work it. You can then keep the finished tonbodama as a key chain or strap.

What is TONBODAMA?

  • A tonbodama is a glass ball with a unique pattern and a hole through it, named after its resemblance to a dragonfly's compound eye. They were used historically by the rich as pouch hangers, obi sashes, hair ornaments and charms, and are now used as items to accent accessories such as mobile phone straps or key chains.
