Doyadoya

Doyadoya

A ritual held on January 14, the wish summation (last) day of Shushoe (a Buddhist ritual to pray for good luck in the year). A solemn ritual is conducted in Shitennoji's temple hall, while young men clad only in loincloths and headbands struggle for banknotes in front of the hall. As they struggle, they shout "doya-doya," and water is poured on them.
