Uemachi Daichi Historical Site Promenade (Tennoji Nana-Saka)
The Historical Site Promenade begins south of the ruins of Naniwanomiya and runs alongside Uemachi Daichi. You can find many of Osaka's historic spots here, including: St. Maria Cathedral in Tamatsukuri; the statues of Mrs. Galacia Hosokawa and Ukon Takayama, both of samurai class who converted to Christianity in the 16th century; Tamatsukuri-Inari Jinja Shrine, a reminder of the ancient artisans who made comma-shaped beads; the Ecchui Well; the drainage ruins; and the remains of Kumano Road. Not far away is Ikutama Jinja Shrine whose history is said to go all the way back to the times of the legendary emperor Jimmu Tenno (B.C. 660). At Taiheiji Temple you can see the graves of such Osaka luminaries as Juan Kitayama, a famous doctor who introduced innovative medical care in the Edo Period, and Monzaemon Chikamatsu, Japan's greatest playwright. If you're a history buff, you'll love walking here.
