Izumi Katsuragisan Beech Forest
This beech forest is rare in that it thrives at such low altitudes where temperatures are high. It was made a National Natural Treasure in 1923. Recently however, global warming and excessive building of logging roads have reduced sapling growth, and conservation work on the section of beech forest designated as a National Natural Treasure is being undertaken jointly by citizens and local authorities.
