Okawa River

Okawa River

The Okawa River runs southward from Kema Lock Gate to the east end of Nakanoshima Island, forming the border between Miyakojima Ward and Kita Ward. There are famous cherry blossom viewing spots on both sides of the Okawa River― Sakuranomiya Park, on the left bank of the river (on the Miyakojima Ward side), and the Mint Bureau in the Tenmabashi area (Kita Ward) on the opposite bank. A little to the north of the Mint Bureau is Osaka Amenity Park (OAP), where the Imperial Hotel Osaka and a shopping mall are situated; to the south of Sakuranomiya Park is Osaka Castle Park. After joining the Neya River to the north of Osaka Castle Park, the Okawa River turns westward and goes under the Tenma Bridge, flowing through the downtown area of Osaka. Nakanoshima Island divides the Okawa River into the Dojima and Tosabori Rivers. These two rivers join back together to form the Aji River. At the foot of the Tenma Bridge in front of the site of Keihan City Mall, there used to be a place called Hachikenya, which flourished as a landing place for 30-koku ships traveling between Fushimi and Osaka. On July 25 every year, the Funatogyo (boat procession) of the Tenjin Festival takes place on the Okawa River. A regular water bus service is available; you can enjoy a river cruise, which takes you under a number of bridges and provides delightful views of downtown Osaka. Enjoy the unique scenery of Osaka, Japan's water capital.
