Osaka City Nagai Sports Center for Persons with Disabilities, located in the Nagai Park, is Japan's first sports facility for people with disabilities. Constructed in 1974, the center was established for the purpose of supporting disabled people through sports activities, so that they can have opportunities for health promotion and functional improvement, gain courage and confidence, and live fulfilled lives by increasing social participation. In the center are a table tennis room, equipped with tables for both regular table tennis and "sound table tennis" for the visually impaired; an indoor heated swimming pool (25 m/6 courses) equipped with an incline to enter the water; and a bowling room, where special equipment is installed providing audio and tactile considerations for people with sight disabilities. The center also provides sports classes for disabled children and their parents to enjoy various sports together, such as basketball, tennis, shuffleboard, and dance. Health counseling services by nurses at a medical counseling room are also available, along with volunteer workshops.
