| Outline | Situated east of Kishiwada Castle’s donjon, Kishiki Jinja is the tutelary shrine of the castle and is home to the Kishiwada Danjiri Festival. The shrine is thought to have originated from a shrine that local farmers dedicated in 1361 to pray for good harvests. The shrine has been known as Gozutenno-sha since about 620 years ago, when it became a branch shrine of Yasaka Jinja in Kyoto by enshrining Susanonomikoto, the resident deity of Yasaka Jinja. The shrine flourished as a tutelary shrine to the local community. When Koide Hidemasa, who served Toyotomi Hideyoshi, undertook a major renovation of Kishiwada Castle during the Keicho Period (1596-1615), the Hachiman-omikami deity came to be enshrined as well. The shrine has since been a place of worship for successive lords of Kishiwada Castle and locals alike. The Meiji Restoration expanded the shrine’s ujiko (parishioner) population, and the name of the shrine was changed to Kishiki Jinja. The present vast shrine complex was completed in 1896. The shrine attracts worshippers seeking love and marriage, because of Kishiwada Castle’s other name Chikiri Castle, which has phonetic affinities with the word chigiri, meaning union or nuptial ties. The shrine’s annual festival is the famous Danjiri Matsuri. |
