- The Grand Sumo Tournament is held six times a year, three of them being staged at Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan. The March Tournament (Spring Tournament) is traditionally held in Osaka. The history of the March Tournament in Osaka dates back to 1953 when the four Tournaments of New Year, Spring, Summer and Autumn became official. The ring is set up at Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium for 15 days of intense, rigorous bouts. It is well worth watching the spectacular rikishi close-up.
