Kids Plaza Osaka: a museum for children and fun for the whole family
Hey everyone! Osaka Bob here. I have just been to one of the most family friendly places in Osaka, and I just can't wait to tell you about it!
Kids Plaza Osaka
With striking interior architecture by Austrian architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser, Kids Plaza Osaka was established in 1997 as the first real museum for children in the country, and continues to provide a fun, safe atmosphere for the whole family to enjoy. Awarded the Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence in 2014, the facility remains one of the highest ranking in Osaka on the Trip Advisor Website! How cool is that?
Kids Plaza Osaka is in the Tenma area, one stop from JR Osaka station on the Loop Line. It's in the Ogimachi Kids Park building right next to Ogimachi park and Indoors, so it's perfect for rainy days. When I went for a visit, I ran into a group of Kids Reporters who were very nice and showed me around! We had such a great time: they're super-duper. Check out the awesome things you can do below!
My guides: Kokoto (10y.o.), Ryoji (9), Yu (9) showed me how to make giant bubbles
Rion (9), and Sora (10) gave me a music lesson with international instruments!
Though the facility doesn't have full-time interpreters, there's no real need to worry about language. Leaflets are available in 5 languages, the staff can communicate in Basic English, but more importantly, almost everything is pretty self-explanatory!
From the Ball Circus that greets you at reception, you know this is gonna be a fun day for the kids. The three floors each have a theme. The 5th floor is the Discovery Floor, where you and the kids will be sucked in before you realize what you're doing. The Adventure Floor (4th) is a make-believe town where the kids can get involved in life experiences like shopping, delivering mail and patrolling as police. And the 3rd floor is the Creativity Floor, a workshop designed to get kids into creativity, with a party kitchen, a tiny science lab, computer lab, an interactive exhibition and additional workshops held that change on a frequent basis. Let me just say that a couple of hours is NOT ENOUGH.
Though there is no cafeteria inside, you're welcome to bring your own bento, or you can leave and return anytime just by just showing your pass. Kids Plaza Osaka is close to the Tenjinbashisuji Arcade (Japan's longest arcade), so there are plenty of food options available.
Mothers with young children need not worry; the facility caters to children 0 years and up; you'll find private baby feeding and changing facilities here, and baby cars are on lend. There is plenty of space for adults to relax with basic refreshments while your children play nearby. Speaking of security! The entrance on the 1st floor and elevator means good security, and the many volunteer staff inside considerately watch over all children in the facility, so you'll never feel unsafe.
If you're travelling with Kids to Kansai, you should definitely consider a spending a day at Kids Plaza Osaka! Thank you to the Kids Reporters for showing me around: you and your facility all get the Osaka Bob Award of Awesomeness!
