The Kansai International Airport, located on an artificial island off of the coast of Senshu in Osaka Bay, opened in September 1994 as the world's first full-scale offshore airport. Known as Kanku, it currently (July 2006) handles flights to and from 71 cities in 31 countries, with 101.4 daily international regular flight services, accommodating approximately 20,000,000 travelers per year. The passenger terminal building consists of a four-story main building and south and north wings; domestic departure and arrival lobbies are on the second floor, the international departure lobby is on the fourth floor, and the international arrival lobby is on the first floor. The second floor is directly connected to a railway station, and arriving bus stops are on the fourth floor while departing bus stops are on the first floor, making ground transportation access very convenient. The passenger terminal building has many shops including restaurants, souvenir shops and massage salons. UNIQLO, a major clothing company, opened a branch there in 2006, providing items that are only available at the Kanku branch. A second runway is planned to open for use in the near future.
