Mount Kongo

A mountain that runs along the border between Osaka and Nara

Mount Kongo (elevation 1,124 meters) is the main peak of the Kongo-Katsuragi mountain ranges that run along the border between Osaka and Nara. Near the mountain peak is the Katsuragi jinja-shrine and the Tenporin-ji temple, the latter of which is said to have been established by En-no-Gyoja, the head of the Shugendo religion, about 1,300 years ago. Near the mountain trail is the site of Chihaya Castle, where Kusunoki Masashige made his resistance against the Kamakura shogunate army towards the end of the Kamakura period. A popular route is to take the trailhead on the foothill of Mount Kongo to the shrine office on the mountaintop plateau via the Chihaya Main trail. In addition, there is another route to the mountain top from Fushimi Forest Road that takes a detour to Chihaya park (Chihaya Nature and Astronomy Museum).
